Upside down

2 weeks have past since my last blogpost.
2 weeks packed with impressions, good and bad.
A few 'ups', a few 'downs'.

Week 2 of Lilla's course was all about 'home decor'.
A market that never crossed my mind before.
The theme: odd pods and succulents. The assignment: a design for a plate.
In the sketching phase - always a fun part - I took out my acrylics, my friends from the past, and enjoyed painting again. I realize now that I miss working with my hands, feeling the brushstrokes, smelling the paint, the 'life' in those strokes... when I work digitally. I also remember why I stopped using them a lot :-) Things can get messy when Lien starts painting! And the control freak inside of me, loves the 'tweakability' of digital. I'm searching for a good balance between the two.

In my sketchbook (image above - left) I wrote: 'like a fish in the see'... but that is the exact opposite of how I felt when I started working on the assignment itself. I think it shines through in my endresult (image above - right).
Proof of something I knew, but what has been emphasized in this course:

Who you are and how you feel has a great impact on your work.

In retrospect: I'm actually intrigued by the weird, darker vibe of what I made. But I can't deny that bright and whimsical is probably more me and more appealing :-)

Week 3 was F.U.N.
That is what you get when you mix 'Children's Books' - the market covered during this week - snails and a fairy tale with an edge from Hans Christian Andersen.

It's also what you get when you get passed a 'down' and let doubts settle.
I'm back on my feet and feel focussed.
Something I can recommend to everyone: determine your goal and focus!
It's a wonderful gift in this age full of doubts, crisis and uncertainties.

I'm so looking forward to what the next two weeks will bring.
Lilla has the ability to make you feel inspired, committed and whiling to learn and stretch yourself.
A wonderful skill that every teacher should have!

I'm off now! It's the last week before summer break and together with some other parents I'm going to surprise my youngest son's teacher with a little 'thank you party'. She deserves it... she's one off those skillfull teachers who makes 'her children' feel save and brings the best out of them.

Piroomette and Peatrus

Week one of Lilla's course seemed like a month!
So many interesting insights.
About how I work, about my work and - important! - about 'the market'.
The first assignment was due sunday. We had to make a design for bolt fabric in a retro kitchen theme.
The sketches we made at the beginning of the week were a good startingpoint and reference.

This was my endresult:

Piroomette, a mushroom lady making a Pirouette, is mixing some eggs and cream while Peatrus chops some mushrooms. Those two have a great quiche potential :-)

I always seem to feel the need to tell a story in my designs, preferably with some 'word games' on the side. It triggers my imagination.
Seeing what other class members made makes me think it might be to far fetched sometimes. I don't know, still in doubt. Maybe Lilla's comments - later today - will give me some answers.

I did make a resolution for this week: Keep it simple and purely decorative this time around. Hey how, let's go!

Back to school

I registered for Lila Roger's online course (make art that sells) a couple of months ago.

This week was the kickoff - finally - and I must admit it was a bit overwhelming meeting all of my 'classmates'. So many people, and so many similar stories! I felt far from original.
It's turning out to be a happy, friendly and supportive community with women and - a few - men from all over the world. And behind those similarities there is a big pile of uniqueness. One of the purposes of this course is to find, recognize or emphasise what that is...

The first week is all about bolt fabric. Our mini assignment was to draw, paint - or whatever - some mushrooms and pyrex casseroles... I'm having fun just freewheeling, sketching and absorbing the - usefull! - insights given in the course.

In a few seconds I'll find out what purpose all these mushrooms and casseroles will have because the big assignment, due sunday, will be online shortly!

In de bus

Er zat gisteren een exemplaar van Grappa in mijn bus mét daarin mijn 'pensioenprent'.
Altijd zéér leuk om dat échte ding in handen te hebben.
Blij met het resultaat!

Collect moments

This quote has been wandering in my mind ever since I found a beautiful designed version of it on pinterest (quote heaven). You can see what I'm taking about if you click on my 'quotebot' on the side.
This weekend I was invited for a housewarming and I brought some frames and my own version of the quote as a gift. I hope those frames will come in handy to collect some memorable moments!

Danke Anke

Ik fabriceerde een aantal weken geleden dit 'dagblad' en stuurde dat naar een wildvreemde. Die wildvreemde, Anke, heeft een blog waar alles draait om snailmail. Net op het moment dat ik er een kijkje ging nemen liet ze weten dat iedereen haar tijdens de maand april wat mocht sturen.
Ik had wel nood aan wat ongedwongen 'fröbelen' - dat helpt soms als je brein vast zit en al wat moet echt niet wil lukken - en dook dus in de inkt en in mijn berg oud behangpapier.
Die 'brief' kwam toe. (joehoe)

Een paar dagen geleden zat er een prachtig pakje van Anke in mijn brievenbus.
De zonen meteen jaloers. Af! Nu krijgt mama eens iets.
Met dat pakje is me nu ook helemaal duidelijk waarom zoveel vrouwen - ja vooral vrouwen - zo verzot zijn op dat 'snailmailen'... je wordt vrolijk als je zo'n kleurrijk pakje in je bus ziet liggen en het wordt helemaal leuk als je die lieve woorden leest en al die gekke, leuke, kleine hebbedingetjes in handen krijgt.
Ik ben nooit zo'n 'meisje meisje' geweest - het jurkjes en juwelen soort -  maar als het op kleine snuister dingetjes en papiertjes aankomt ben ik op en top meisje. Heerlijk!
Dus, nog eens uit volle borst: Danke Anke!

A fresh bunch

'Cat and dog' now for sale @afreshbunch

A fresh bunch (AFB) gaat deze week van start met haar marktplaats. Na heel wat weken van voorbereiden en op punt stellen mag de wijde wereld het weten en vooral zien... Bij AFB kan eender wie op een correcte, duidelijke en snelle manier een licensie kopen op een hele schare aan dessins.
Ook ik ben sinds kort verbonden aan AFB als ontwerper. Een tweetal weken geleden kon je dat lezen op hun blog. Ik hou wel van de aanpak van deze amerikaanse dames. Ze zijn pittig, efficiënt en gedreven.
Ik kijk uit naar wat volgt!

A fresh bunch (AFB) launched their marketplace yesterday. That calls for a big YAY. After weeks of preparation the whole world is invited to come over. Anyone can buy and license hand-picked art from a bunch of global designers in a correct, clear and quick way.
I joined AFB recently and had my spotlight moment on their blog about two weeks ago (twinkel twinkel). I love how these ladies handle things. They are punchy, efficient en driven.
I'm looking forward to what follows!

Mieke houdt me vast

Schaaf dat commerciële kantje er af en 't is best leuk, zo'n dag in teken van je moeder.

Ik mocht gisteren het moederen wat achterwege laten - dat deed manlief wel op z'n papa manier - en kreeg de tijd om in alle rust een pakje voor mijn moeder te maken.

Voor mama was het de eerste moederdag (de sossen versie) zonder moeder.
Ik wou al lang iets voor haar maken met enkele wollen dekens van oma - moeders moeder - en dit leek me de ideale gelegenheid.

Het werd een über recyclage tasje met naast die wollen dekens van oma ook nog een stuk hemd dat ooit van mama was, een restje van een van mijn eigen stofjes én knopen van meter - moeders schoonmoeder. Zowaar, vier moeders op een rij.

'Mieke houdt me vast' zegt het tasje trots :-)
Dat liedje zong en zingt ze vaak, Annemie(ke), mijn moeder.
Nu draagt ze Bliet - inderdaad ja, haar moeder - nog op een andere manier met zich mee.

Jaaah ik weet het, ik zei toch al dat ik een weekdier ben, en dan heb ik het nog niet eens gehad over hoe ik vroeger onder die dekens werd ingestopt door oma Bliet - héééél strak - en hoe ze me heeft geleerd het perfecte bed op te maken - dat witte laken er zo mooi overgeplooid - en hoe mama me er toe bracht om mijn donsovertrekken binnenstebuiten de kast in te steken...

Weekdier

Al snuisterend - klinkt beter dan opruimen, toch? - kwam ik de sigarendoosjes van meter tegen die ik na haar overlijden meenam als souvenir. Doosjes gevuld met een allegaartje aan knopen en garen. Tussen alle klosjes een stukje krijt en een stompje potlood. 

Daar werd ik helemaal week van. Ik ben zo'n 'sentimens' dat kan genieten van geleefd spul. Een heus weekdier.

Ik stel me nu voor dat mijn kleindochter ooit in mijn huis zal komen snuisteren - ik zorg wel dat het tegen dan wat opgeruimd is - en op wat stompjes botst. Heeel veel stompjes, van Derwent over Conté tot Ikéa  (bij die laatste is de stompstaat trouwens snel bereikt).

Lieve kleindochter, als je dit ooit leest: dat stompje op deze foto vind je vast ook nog ergens terug. In de buurt van een stukje krijt? Het was van je betovergrootmoeder Caroline. Geen idee of ze iets met stikken had, maar ze kon overheerlijke mattentaart bakken. Kusje van oma Lien.

En nu over naar de orde van de dag. Een beetje snuisteren in het afwasmachien en eens kijken of ik in de wasmand iets ontroerends kan ontdekken!

King Carrotey and Queen Beanatrice

They don't have to of course, but King Carrotey and Queen Beanatrice love digging in the durt and getting some work done in the garden. Garded by their goblingards they can relax in the garden. When enemies approach: en garde!

Pensioen

Ik smeet me op een illustratie voor GRAPPA. Een magazine van de KBC bank dat door Decom gemaakt wordt. Deze prent is voor de editie rond het thema pensioen. Dank aan Bart De Vliegher voor de opdracht!

Ik ging voor een geliefde formule: beperkt kleurenpallet, een beeld waar je steeds weer wat extra in kan ontdekken - ik beloon graag de kijker die veeeeel aandacht schenkt - en natuurlijk wat 'grain' zoals Alex Calier zou zeggen, in de vorm van textuurtje.

Niet al té cliché papa?? Weet dat die vrouw eerst een krullebol had en die man een kale kop.

Ja, ja, netjes afgewerkt

​Een prent in opdracht van Jansen & Janssen (jaja) voor een publicatie rond netwerken en crowdsourcing. Hun vraag was om de thema's van de verschillende hoofdstukken en cases in één prent te verwerken. Het beeld zal als cover gebruikt worden en binnenin als een patroon in herhaling geplaatst worden. Doorheen het hele boekje wordt telkens een andere focus gelegd naargelang het onderwerp. Ik hou wel van dit soort puzzels!

A picture commissioned by​ Jansen & Janssen for a publication about crowdsoucing and networking. They asked me to assimilate the topics of all the chapters and cases in one picture. The image will be used as a cover and as a pattern throughout the book focussing on the different topics.

Mailed my art

Finished and on it's way to the United Kingdom... my contribution to the 3rd edition of 'Mail me art'. 

A project organized by Darren Di Lieto and his Little Chimp Society.You can read all about it here.

I made stencils and then used sponges and ink to transfer my picture on paper. Yes, yes, it was a great big mess. You may notice that the design can be used in repeat. I'm getting addicted to making 'pattern pictures'.

My inspiration... doesn't every mail - the real thing - lover thinks a mailman is kind of a superman? He's always my hero when he brings me that card, letter, package,... I've long been waiting for.

I'm now looking forward to the book and the exhibition. The book will feature the work of the 200 selected artist that made a contribution. All profits go to charity. The exhibition is at The Farmers Gallery in London from 30th July - 3rd August. More on that on the MMA website.

I guess it's time to clean up that mess now. Or... make some more!

Whisper

Nog eens wat ontspannende pret met patat achter de rug!
Ik kan het iedereen aanbevelen.
Hou vanavond een patatje opzij.
Zoek jezelf een thema als trigger (hier vind je elke vrijdag een nieuw woord).
Snij er op los en stempelen maarrrrrr...

Trouwens, mét kinderen is dit een allesbehalve ontspannende activiteit!
(kind(eren) + mes + inkt = wezet waakzaam)

Restgeval

Oooh wat was ik mijn scherm beu gisteren.
Ondanks allerlei to do's gaf ik er de brui aan.
Er stond - nog - niets te springen en de zinnen moesten even verzet.
Ik suste me met 'dat leren stikken is ook een investering in de toekomst' en kroop achter de naaimachine.

Ik besloot restjes stof te gebruiken, met als hoofdrolspeler de oude kleurenkaart van spoonflower.
Voor een patroon ging ik te rade bij Sanne en Riet. Want die 'Zo geknipt' staarde me steeds beschuldigend aan. Al maanden op de boekenhoop en slechts éénmaal écht gebruikt.

Voortaan staat mijn 'restgeval' altijd klaar, gevuld met kleurboeken, tekenpapier en potloden. Dat grabbel ik namelijk altijd mee om mijn kinders te entertainen...

En nu dat knuffelboek van Fiona Dalton eens bovenhalen.
Of nee, toch maar eerst wat van die to do's. Pffff.

Mail me art

Yay! I received an invite to participate in 'Mail me art'. A project from Darren Di Lieto. The man behind the Little Chimp Society. This 3rd edition is called 'short and sweet' and will also include an exhibition and a book. 

I love 'real mail', I love collaborations and the profit made goes to charity... a perfect project indeed.
I'm ready to hatch my own C5 envelope!

Een dag van rood en blauw

Er was er eentje jarig afgelopen zondag.

Een dag van rood en blauw zo bleek.

Rood van feest en fel en vrolijk.

Blauw van weemoed, de balans en mixed emotions.

Ik kreeg heerlijke verwennerij van mijn man en mannetjes.

Ik werd M ambassadeur dankzij MaMa en ging prompt naar Roe Ethridge kijken.

Ik ging afscheid nemen van een huis uit het verleden en nam wat souvenirs mee om me die plek - en vooral haar bewoners en de bezoekjes van voorheen - blijvend te herinneren.

A day of red and blue

It was someones birthday last Sunday.

It turned out to be a day of red and blue.

Red of feast and bright and cheerful.

Blue of melancholy, balance and mixed emotions.

My boys - the big one and the small ones - pampered me.

I received a subscription for the M-Museum from my MoM and visited the Roe Ethridge exhibition straightaway.

I went to say goodbye to a house from the past and took some souvenirs with me. A way to keep remembering all those happy occasions and sleepovers that took place there during my childhood and - even more important - a way to treasure it's inhabitants.

Hij komt, hij komt,... de échte winter staat - naar 't schijnt - voor de deur.

S(o)uper

Kerstvakantie voorbij... dus tijd voor ACTIE!
Naast wat werk in opdracht ook deze eindelijk afgewerkt. Nu nog enkel een digitaal ding, maar vanaf volgende week een heuse (reuze) kaart op A5 formaat om s(o)uper mensen of s(o)uper prestaties (of lekkere soep) te bewieroken.

En ja, voor wie het nog niet had opgemerkt. Sinds kort verkoop ik kaarten van eigen makelij via etsy.
Ik ben nu naast illustrator en vormgever ook een klein beetje winkelmadam :-)

Holiday over and done... time for ACTION!
I finally managed to finish this illustration. At the moment just a digital thing, but next week it will be a real (big) greetingcard. To appreciate s(o)uper people or s(o)uper performances (or just super soup).

And yes indeed, if you hadn't noticed jet. I started selling my own cards on etsy recently. So from now on I'm an illustrator, designer and kind of a shopkeeper :-)
